Managed Lighting Design .  Product Sourcing .  Cost Engineering .  Project Integration

Insight Light has experience with, and an understanding of the full Life-cycle of lighting installations. This offers benefit to the enduser of a Future Proof lighting installation considering –

ENERGY EFFICIENCY . Minimising energy consumption, and offsetting the rising cost of energy by utilising new more efficient Light sources, such as the rapidly expanding and increasingly affordable field of LED lighting.

LOW MAINTENANCE Installations considering - lamp life, luminaire quality, durability, suitability for purpose, and alternative options.

INTEGRATION of Lighting with Architecture and Lighting Control designed to maximise Energy Efficiency, and to provide an intuitive welcoming and dynamic Lit environment.

An understanding of Lighting control technologies such as Dali, DSI, Switchdim, DMX, Prescence and Daylight detection, and the dynamic benefits they add to lighting.

Integration with and advice regarding Lighting Control Options including simple switching and presence detection for the home, through to home automation, and Commercial Building Energy Management systems.

By way of introduction, my career in Lighting is grounded in both a Bachelor of Spatial Design, and a Postgraduate qualification in Illumination Engineering, with 15 year's experience working within the Lighting and Design Industries.

Insight Light offers a creative and innovative approach to lighting Space based upon a high standard of Technical Lighting Design and Illumination Engineering

I am not limited to proposing lighting from a particular lighting manufacturer or supplier's product portfolio, and often source niche lighting products either locally or internationally to suit my clients specific requirements.

I am motivated by the opportunity to participate in the development of lighting concepts, and the application of both new and established lighting technologies to meet the many and varied needs of 'real world' Lighting applications for use by people.

Spatial Design has been a personal passion for many years, and Lighting Design the focus of this, as I see light as the common fundamental visual element of all space, and enjoy the diverse range of types of projects lighting lends itself to.

When evaluating the effect that light has upon both space and ourselves, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

For this reason I believe both Light and Lighting Design should be considered Holistically, to the benefit of all those who apply and utilise it.

Architectural Lighting . Commercial Lighting . Residential Lighting . Urban & Landscape Lighting

My experience in lighting has been with a diverse range of Residential Lighting , Commercial Lighting , Hospitality Lighting , Retail Lighting , Display Lighting , Hospital Lighting , Industrial Lighting , and Urban Lighting. The projects I personally enjoy the most are those with a creative element and a challenge.

An understanding that best practice in Lighting design aspires to atmospheric enhancement of the architecture and space, well considered integration, and the visual comfort, safety, and stimulation of the occupants.

The diverse range of types of projects I have been fortunate to participate in have broadened my understanding of the many and varied uses of both space, and light.

I work collaboratively with, and on behalf of -

  • End User Owners

  • Project Managers

  • Architects

  • Interior Designers

  • Construction Companies & Builders

  • Landscape Architects & Designers

  • Electrical Consultants & Engineers

  • Lighting Suppliers & Wholesalers

  • Automation Specialists

  • Electrical Installers

Thorough Detailing and Documentation

Luminaire Positions and Aiming, Luminaire Types, Control gear, Lamp Types, Beam angles, Colour Temperature, Colour Rendering, Scene Circuits. Costing. Energy Use.

From experience, the project teams with the clearest communication and flow of information - technical and otherwise - are the most successful in terms of avoiding revisiting work, unnecessary cost, and time delays. They are also the most successful in realising a shared vision. It is essential to ensure that all aspects of the Lighting design, architecture, luminaires and lighting control technologies are compatible.

Having participated in many projects that are 'built to last' I have developed a sound commercial knowledge of product and lighting technology related issues. To greater or lesser degree, all lighting installations need to be assessed holistically with regard to – capital cost, lighting effect, aesthetic, energy efficiency, maintenance, life-cycle & durability, etc…

NEW LIGHT TECHNOLOGY

Energy Efficient and Low Maintenance LED Lighting is becoming increasingly affordable, with variations in production to suit an extremely diverse range of applications, of an even wider range of quality, performance, and cost.

Control and Driver Compatibility - Most LED products need to be coupled with 'specific' power supply and lighting control requirements of varying complexity. The benefits of new technology are to the end user and need not become complex providing you and the project electrical installers are well advised.

LIGHT & ENERGY AUDIT

Often the only difference between investing in a Future Proofed energy efficient solution or not, is perceiving the cost benefits by comparing two or more options - either competing alternatives, or existing lighting vs new higher efficiency lighting.

The main advantages of Investing in Energy Efficient Lighting to the end user are - Long lamp life (meaning Low Maintenance), and - High light output vs power consumption, or Efficiency.

As with any investment one needs to ask the question - Does it stack up?

Total Watts of Lighting Installation x Hours of Use per year x $0.26c (av 2014) per/kilowatt Hour = Cost of installation per annum.

A simple calculation from which a relative Payback Period and/or Annual Power Saving can be extrapolated.

The cost of doing this ground work is far outweighed by the cost of 'not' doing so.

LIGHTING DESIGN SERVICE

Whilst most Lighting suppliers in New Zealand offer a 'free design service', employee time remains a cost to the business extending it, which is generally recouped from the cost of the lighting product. The downsides to this are -

  • You pay more for the product, which has company overheads as well as profit factored into pricing.
  • It would be fair to consider whether adequate time and resources will be dedicated to your project to ensure a managed process and an optimal, Future Proofed result.
  • A "free" service is at the end of the day 'all care and no responsibility', and you risk getting what you pay for.

My background in Lighting specification has allowed me to participate in all aspects of the path to the end result, beginning with preliminary client briefings, concept design, documentation and presentation, cost engineering, lighting supply, installation support and post installation follow-up.

Whilst my role as an independent Lighting designer no longer directly involves me in the supply of product, I have developed essential supporting relationships with lighting importers, suppliers and manufacturers in a position to offer best quality product, value for money, and after-sale backup.

Being independent allows me to propose cost effective sources for different types of product. My commercial experience puts me in a good position to understand relative costs - where there are savings to be made, and where there are pitfalls with regard to ‘cheaper’ alternatives.

In general I manage to save my clients on the cost of lighting products specified without compromising the end result, as well as promoting savings on future running costs. The service I offer is not factored into the price of lighting I propose, and I work directly on behalf of my clients to meet my clients budgets.
